Olympians Prepare for Battle

Balls are rolling and pins are falling for the Special Olympics Partners Club. The special needs athletes and their partners (student helpers) are already preparing for a big bowling tournament that will take place in November. “We have two tournaments taking place, there’s an open one on Nov. 11 that is for fun and there’s a big competitive one that is like a jamboree on Nov. 13,” said Brett Ducher, a life skills instructor and sponsor for the club. “The whole Anchorage School District is doing it and we are seeing if we can get Kodiak, Fairbanks and Palmer to come,” Ducher said The athletes are practicing three times a week and the top two along with their partners will go to the Mat-Su to compete in the High School Unified Bowling Event on Nov. 13. Meetings for the Special Olympics Club take place during both freshman and upper class lunch in A100 every Tuesday. Meetings are open to anyone who would like to help make a difference in these athletes’ lives.
