Dimond baseball season is swinging into action this month. Students and athletes are ready to go. Dimond’s team this year is looking particularly good this year. Large numbers of players showed at tryouts this year, and many made varsity. One of those athletes is Kyle Kornegay. He is a four-year varsity senior pitcher and is looking to lead Dimond to a state title. “The team is looking pretty strong this year, I think we have a good shot at state this year with the amount of good players that tried out,” said Kornegay. Many teachers this year have been looking forward to watching the games as their students work to beat the competition. “I can’t wait to watch my students beat South this year . They have a great chance this year with such a strong senior class,” said Dimond teacher Scott Campbell. Another Dimond senior is looking to help the team this year. Sagan Osborne has been playing for Dimond since freshman year. H e has been working extremely hard in the off-season to step his game to the next level. His confidence is up with a basketball state title already. “I train hard all the time to make sure I do my part on the team. One person can’t do it all, so I try to spread my love for the game and get others on the team to train hard too,” said Osborne. Dimond won a state title two years ago but was beaten out of the final by South Anchorage High School. They are looking for revenge against the South baseball team. Now that the younger players have developed and honed their skills the chance for a state has significantly increased for this year’s boys. Not only has the team’s skill gotten better, but the Dimond staff and student population support has gone up a lot. Eight out of 10 students when asked, “Will you be going to most if not all the team’s games?” replied, “Yes.” “I have a lot of my family and friends from different schools coming to my games, so hopefully that will bring in a bigger crowd for us at most of our games.” said Dimond Junior Payton Lauwers. Dimond is coached by Brad Lauwers. Lauwers has been coaching DHS Baseball for many years now and bringing a good sense of competitiveness to his athletes.
