I went to see The Meg 2 in theaters recently, and while I was entertained I was also confused and disappointed. If you haven’t seen it yet, I would only recommend it if you like shark movies that have very little sharks involved. The overall premise of the movie goes as follows: Jonas Taylor is leading an expedition to the deepest part of the ocean, but when they get there they discover a secret mining operation. Taylor and his team have to figure out how to shut down the operation, get out of the trench, and outrun their enemies. It’s a good premise, but it wasn’t executed in the best way. The movie is full of stereotypes, some good and some a bit iffy, but overall the movie was pretty good. It was compelling, and fun to watch. It was clear the actors and crew tried hard to make it funny, most of the actors are ones I’ve personally never heard of (aside from Jason Statham), however, as I look them up I’m seeing the other movies they have played in. The girl cast as the daughter figure, Meiying has only had two roles. Cast in The Meg, and the Meg 2. Jason Statham (the lead role) has been in many films and film franchises including Fast & Furious, and Gnomeo and Juliet. After looking up reviews, I discovered that most of the reviews entailed some sort of, ‘I didn’t expect to like this movie but it’s good, cheesy, and fun. Overall an entertaining movie.’ One particular review by Vicckram Singh called the movie “over the top stupid” and honestly this is a good way to sum up all of the one-star reviews. On the other end of the spectrum are the 5-star reviews, one of which by Kirstanuci Kirstanuci calling the movie, “A feel-good exciting cheesy masterpiece of silly”. I think I would agree with these sorts of reviews, even though I have my own complaints. The logic used in the movie is nothing if not flawed, if the shark you are trying to avoid is in the water, why stay in the water so long? Questions like this are often brought up after watching the movie, which is clearly shown in reading the reviews. One of the reviews I read focused on the technical and logical aspects of the movie, and where logic was clearly not used. The movies are highly unbelievable, even without considering the idea of actual megalodons still alive. There is one part where the main character, Jonas, has to swim outside the underwater mining station, all the way around to the door. He has to hold his breath for probably well over a minute while straining himself to swim as fast as he can, and he also has to somehow survive the pressure at the bottom of the deepest trench in the world. The movie is based on the idea that somehow megalodons have survived at the bottom of the ocean, which is clearly, unfeasibly impossible. Personally, this movie seems almost like a reboot or remake of Jaws but made more modern and more science-based. As I looked through sources and reviews, I saw that my personal opinions were also held by seemingly a lot of people. After looking at rotten tomatoes and seeing the 73% audience score and 28% Tomatometer score I honestly was not surprised. The critic consensus goes as follows, “It isn’t without its fun moments, but Meg 2: The Trench suffers from a disjointed story that drifts for too long before finally delivering a few campy thrills.” (Rotten Tomatoes) Honestly, this was a goofy action movie with a not-too-serious plot, and I enjoyed it. While there are problems with plot holes and inconsistencies, it was overall a good film and fun to watch.
