The Lady Lynx topped the West High Eagles 22-0 in the championship game Oct. 22. 

Dimond went into the playoffs as the 4th seed, which is not a usual spot for the team.

 The Lynx were playing this year with a less experienced team as there were only two varsity returners. 

The victory was a special one for team captain Skyler Coleman, one of only two returners, as she said, “The victory was very rewarding, the team was young so we all had to work extra hard all season and our work led us to victory.”

 The Lynx started the playoffs playing the Service Cougars, coming out on top and moving on to play the undefeated South Wolverines.

Head Coach Kathleen Navarre said, “ Going in to play South who is a very good team, we knew it was going to be a battle, we had to be clean with the ball on offense and defense.

 “We lost to them in the regular season on a special teams touchdown, so we tightened it up all week in practice. I preached all week long that it was anyone’s game and the girls really showed that.” 

Dimond came back from being down a touchdown to win in the final two minutes 7-6.

  Heading into the championship game against West, the Lynx knew that West had made it to the last five championships, but had placed second every single time. 

Five straight championships is pretty intimidating. 

As Coleman said, “ It really is, five straight years is very impressive, but we knew not to go in scared or over confident, we needed to stay calm and just play our game. Coming off the big win against South helped our confidence too.” 

Dimond got off to a fast start in the game, forcing the Eagles to go three and out and then scoring on their first drive.

 Navarre said, “That shifted the game a lot, normally we prefer to have our offense out on the field first, however this year we put a lot of trust in our defense and for them to get the stop was huge. 

“Then for our offense to turn around and score was big for the pace of the game, it really gave the girls confidence.”

 Dimond’s game just got better and better with touchdowns from Coleman, freshman Mai Mateaki and sophomore Ellie Cunningham. The Lady Lynx finished the game, winning 22-0. 

The Lynx played without senior punter and wide receiver Riley McMahan due to an injury in the semi-final game. 

It was hard on the team as Navarre said, “I hate when anyone gets hurt, it takes a toll on me and the girls. The girls knew we had to win for Riley and they did that, they stayed focused and that is one of the best games I had seen the team play.”

 Despite the Covid-filled season and minor setbacks, the Lady Lynx came out on top with a state championship. This is the 8th state title for the Lady Lynx.
