Have you ever wondered what our school or any other of the schools in the district are named after? Today I am going to tell you, and you may be surprised. I’m pretty sure everyone here at Dimond knows who the school was named after, but if you didn’t know, here it is, Mr. Anthony Joseph Dimond. He was born on November 30, 1881, and passed on May 28th, 1953. He was an Alaskan pioneer and federal judge who left New York for the great state of Alaska. Well, anyways other schools are named after other people and some just have names but the ones named after people are A.J. Dimond High School, Bettye Davis East High, Robert Service High, Bob Bartlett High, Martin Luther King Tech, and Georg Wilhelm Steller. The other schools that are just named are West Anchorage High School, South Anchorage High School, and Polaris.

Bettye Davis was born on May 17th, 1938, and was an American social worker and politician. She was the first African American to be elected as an Alaskan State Senator in the year 2000. She passed away at the age of 80 in 2018.

Robert Service was born on January 16th, 1874, and was a British-Canadian poet and writer. He was called “the bard of the Yukon” sometimes and he was a bank clerk as well. He died at the age of 84 in 1958.

Edward “Bob” Bartlett was born on April 20th, 1904, and was an Alaskan politician and a member of the democratic party. He also served as the secretary of Alaska territory from 1939 to 1945, in congress from 1945 to 1959 and again as a delegate, and from 1959 to his death as a senator. He passed away at the age of 64 in 1968.

Martin Luther King Jr born on January 15th, 1929 was an American Baptist minister and activist. He was one of the most important leaders in the civil rights movement from 1955 to his death in 1968 at the age of 39.

Georg Wilhelm Steller was born on March 10th, 1709, and was a German botanist, zoologist, physician, and explorer. He also worked in Russia and was considered a pioneer of Alaskan history. He passed away at the age of 37 in 1746.
