Homecoming is the first dance of the school year, and one of any high school’s biggest events, except for prom. It’s a chance to show off new clothes, shoes, and killer dance moves. It’s also a chance to celebrate the new school year. Many students were crowding the ticket booths waiting to purchase their tickets for the event. All week long, people were showing their school spirit and barely contained excitement for the dance. At the dance, everyone was dressed in their best or favorite outfits. The music was so loud you could feel it in your bones. Even though the DJ was making fun of Dimond a bit, most had a great time. In the commons, along with concessions, a very aggressive game of Heads Up! was being played.
The photobooth was quite popular. Many students flocked there with friends and dates to have their pictures taken by LT, one of the art teachers at Dimond. Those photos will be available to find online. There will be a Canvas announcement with more details soon. Dimond yearbook staff and journalism students also took many photos at the dance. One yearbook staff member was frustrated about not having a camera ready to capture a very photograph-worthy moment between two students. “It would have been better if I had taken more photos,” the student complained. “There were so many good shots missed. Well, shots that I don’t think the others captured correctly.” While there seemed to be a tragedy with good photos for the school by the students, as our own photographer had only taken around 57 photos, the dance was a hit.
When asked what students’ favorite parts of the dance were; some replied that it was hanging out with friends and/or significant others, while others loved showing off their dance moves, and still others liked showing off and seeing everyone’s outfits. Opinions about the DJ were varied, some thought he was rude, others didn’t really have any opinion about him. Roux Barnes, a junior here at Dimond, said that the dance would have been better if the DJ played better music. When asked to elaborate, they said, “The music needed more genre variety, and there were too many overplayed pop songs in the DJ’s set.” Another student said that he was decent, but had to stop the music often because some students were causing problems. Half of the songs were well-known, others not so much. Those songs were almost always switched to more popular ones. A student said she, “wished the DJ would have listened to the students more, but I understood that he was trying to make the teachers happy as well as the students.” Overall, the students agree that the DJ was average, however in a school setting, the DJ was appealing more towards the policies.
While overall, the dance could have been better, as a Dimond student, being able to have all four yearly dances is great. Homecoming is a celebration of the last home game of a varsity football team which is important to school culture. I am looking forward to going to Crystal Ball!
