In snowboarding, the board you choose sometimes relates to how big you are or tall or how you stand, etc. Also, where you live has a big impact on what kind of snowboard you get. For example, if you lived in a higher elevation state like Colorado you might get a powder board (I will explain what a powder board is and all other types used soon), or if you live in low elevation you might get a backcountry board or a split board. Though, a split board can be used in high elevation too but in a different way. In high elevation, you would use it for climbing but for low elevation, you would use it for trekking across flatlands. Most people start out on an all-mountain board, which is obvious in what it is used for, but then the more you ride and how you ride usually molds you into which board category you use. If you like doing tricks then you might like a park board or an all-mountain board with more flex. However, flex is usually up to the rider, typically park riders like more flex because boards with more flex have less filling in the board making it lighter and it’s good for tricks too. Now if you liked riding in powder you would get a powderboard or a backcountry board because that is what they are made for. They are usually wider than other boards and most times directional, meaning you can only ride them one way. The boards are directional because the front end of the board, also known as the nose of the board, is tilted more upward to compensate for the snow’s depth. If the powder board’s nose was more upward it wouldn’t be able to keep the nose above the snow, forcing you to sit and get stuck in the snow which isn’t fun (trust me it has happened to me before). Now there are boards for people who like to race snowboarders too. Boardercross is what it’s called and there are others like slalom and giant slalom which is like ski racing but for snowboards. These boards are virtually flat and are made with a different type of resin for the bottom to make it faster, but it also makes them extremely expensive and fragile, sadly, so you can’t bend or flex them too much or they will snap. However, they are very fast. I have one myself. Some boards have different variations like for example the skate banana by Lib Tech. It has what is called a reverse camber. The picture explains it, but it isn’t usually used, it is more directionalized to park riding and carving on groomers. Groomers is a term used to describe the standard mountain tracks like a hilltop. Some people don’t like the feeling of it, though, but that is okay. There are so many variations of the standard snowboard that you can be super picky with it. In conclusion, snowboarding is cool. Do it or don’t, I can’t force you.
