Girls Sports Teams Excel

The girls sports teams excel above most most of the teams here at Dimond High School.  Last year we were recognized as a finalist in USA Today’s contest for the best girls sports program all over the United States.

USA Today recognized AJ Dimond High as a finalist for the best girls sports program in the country. The girls sports at Dimond have continued to improve since we were finalists in USA Today’s competition.

In the 2014-2015 school year alone, the flag football team, cheerleading team and the basketball team all won state championship titles. This is not to mention the past wins or other sports teams that will win this year.

Flag Football has won the last 3 years in a row and only lost a total of one game in the last three years.

Taelor Hawley, a senior at Dimond, has been on the varsity team all three years and has 3 titles under her belt.

“The best part of being on such a successful team is the bond that it creates between the players and coaches,” said Hawley.

“Winning the State championships three years in a row has been a great accomplishment of mine in high school. I don’t participate in many sports, and so for my main sport to be one that myself and the team have excelled in the most is something I am most proud of,” said Hawley.

Cheerleading has won the last three years as well. The Comp team has won two years in a row, and the 2014-2015 year basketball cheerleading won. Cheerleading at Dimond has been extremely successful.

The teams, whether they be cheering for football (varsity and jv), comp, basketball or hockey always take Grandchamps at regions and other various competitions that they compete at.

“Cheer is a great sport to be in. I have been apart of all three teams that have won state titles, and the accomplishments have been tremendous,” said Senior Callan Drake.

Drake  has also cheered for football, and has won with that team and states that it’s “so much fun.”

Football doesn’t get a chance to win a state title; however, they did win Grandchamps at a region competition in Chugiak. They were the only team to  beat Colony for the first time in 13 years.

Dimond’s girls basketball won state as well this year. They have been trying super hard to win the last few years, but this year they were able to seal the deal.

“We have been trying so hard to get that final win, and when it happened this year I couldn’t help but cry because I knew that at that moment I had accomplished more than most, and I was very thankful,” said Senior Lauren Hines.

Winning state not only for flag but for basketball was the icing on the cake for Hines.

“That team will always be my family, just like flag. However, the win was different for basketball because we hadn’t won yet,” said Justine Anderson, a senior.

Anderson felt as though this win was her best because she has tried so hard to win and they finally got it this year.
